Most of the time you're supposed to use RAM as either 2 in one color slot, or 4 in all of them. I don't think you're supposed to mix and match the yellow and black slots. What Does the RAM Slot Color Coding on Motherboards Mean?

The color on the DIMM slots themselves reflect what type of channel they are if you have four slots and for example two are blue and two are black that means you have a Dual channel system. So if you were installing 1 RAM stick into it you would install it into the first slot. If you are installing two sticks you would install them into two slots of the same color.
